A Few Thoughts On Leadership
A few thoughts on leadership.
Lately there seem to be lots of FB posts regarding leadership. While the topic of leadership has been popular for several years it seems to pop up on my feed quite a bit these days. Having been in several leadership roles over the years it is a topic that always holds an interest for me. I've been through all kinds of leadership courses, seminars and surveys. All of them have had basic tenants that remain the same. I've made more than my fair share of mistakes in spite of my "head knowledge". One thing I've learned is that it really doesn't matter how "educated you are on the topic if you don't practice what you know. Here are a few of the things I know.
1: You must respect those you lead. Being in a leadership role does not place you somehow "above" your team, employees, family members etc. Everything you do and say needs to communicate respect. This applies to both public and private conversations. Demeaning, condescending or foul language in public or private is never the mark of a good leader.
2: A good leader asks questions and then listens for answers. Settling conflict often falls to a leader. A good leader always listens to all sides of a situation before they respond. Leaders never react... they respond. There is a huge difference between the two.
3: Practice what you preach. Leaders are ALWAYS being watched. Know that if there is discrepancy between what you say and what you do you will always lose credibility with those you lead. Hypocrisy will always lead to failure as a leader.
4: True leaders don't lead using intimidation or fear tactics. Your team may do their job but they will hold no respect for you and your effectiveness as a leader will be compromised.
5: Carefully consider your motivation. How do you view those you lead? Are they a means to an end or are they highly valued? How do you communicate that value to them? Are they compensated appropriately for their time and efforts? Do you communicate your appreciation verbally?
6: A mature, wise leader will admit when wrong and is always willing to learn.
7: Great leaders accept criticism and consider its value. This is a tough one but a good leader can accept constructive criticism and grow from it.
8: Ego has no role in the life of a leader. It doesn't matter what your accomplishments or accolades. Your effectiveness as a leader will hinge greatly on you're humility. This relates heavily to #3 and #6. Those who know you best and work for and with you see right through false humility.
When my kids were growing up one of the last things I would say to them as the got out of the car for school was, " Be a leader, not a follower," ( Followed by I love you!)
The truth is, everyone has the potential to lead on some level in life, but only a few become great leaders. I guess then the question becomes; If you lead, are you doing it well? If you are following, do those you follow deserve your respect?
