A Beautiful Obsession

Ok, I know that just a blog or two ago I said that I'd decided to curb the need to build more garden beds for the time being. I was mistaken? I lied? I changed my mind? Yeah, that's it! I changed my mind. ;)

You see, I have a VERY good excuse! I was sitting this morning on the patio having my second, (or was it third) cup of tea, enjoying the buzz of the bumble bees and the birds chirping minding my own business when something began to gnaw at me. That dead spot near the raised garden bed. The one that was bare of grass and looked absolutely hideous! It was really messing up my view!

Hmmmmm.... well? If the grass isn't growing that makes it all the easier to dig a new bed... right? Yep! I was right! It took me no time at all to get out the garden fork and shovel and dig a rather odd shaped bed (I like odd shapes.) and dump in a mess of that peat moss that B got by accident. (I'd sent him for sphangum moss, not sphangum PEAT moss!) The soil was really horrible, as has been most of the soil in my yard, so adding in the peat was a fantastic way to ammend the soil and use up that huge bag!

You can see by the picture just how odd shaped this new bed looks but actually, I do have a plan! Just to the right and left of it will be walkways that I eventually will cover with pea gravel. In the meantime things may look a little odd until all of the beds are dug and the walkways finished.

Now I just need to go get some composted manure and rose soil from Gardenville to further improve this nasty excuse for dirt. If you live in San Antonio I really do recommend a visit to Gardenville on Evans Rd. They specialize in organics and their products are really very good. Then, I need to go find just the right plants to put in this space. It will get direct, hot sun all day long so they'll have to be quite tough. Fortunately, I've got a play date scheduled with my friend Mary this Saturday. I'm thinking the ban on the garden centers might just need to be lifted for a little bit?! :)

Ps... In case you're wondering, Brian's response to the newly turned garden bed was... "So, I suppose this is my fault because I bought the wrong sphangum moss?" He's finally catching on after all these years!
