Bancha Hojicha Tea- A Review
It's no secret that I am a serious tea enthusiast. I love trying new teas and creating my own blends.
Today, while out running some errands I came across a tea I had never heard of before. As I read the description on the box I grew even more curious. It was described as; " A roasted Japanese Green Tea". Hmmmm... I love green tea and had never heard of the roasted variety. Always wanting to educate myself on what I'm drinking and loving all things tea, I decided to do some research. The following is what I found.
" Hojicha (also spelled houjicha) is customarily produced from the sun-grown Japanese green tea known as bancha, which is typically harvested from the tea plant later in the season, after the first and second flushes of tea. (It can also be made from earlier-harvested senchaleaves, and may or may not include a lot of stems and twigs.)"
I was pleasantly surprised by this tea. It is deeper in color than the green teas I have tried in the past. The roasted flavor of Hojicha reminds me of coffee. It has a nutty, earthy and somewhat caramelly flavor with creamy undertones that are familiar to green tea drinkers. I didn't drink my first cup with milk or cream. (I typically drink my teas "black".) According to the box, due to the roasting process, the caffeine content of this tea is lower than a typical green tea.
Tea dose: Hojicha is deceptively lightweight due to its pre-roasting. Steep one teabag in about 6 oz. of water.
Water: Between 175°-185°F
Time: 30 to 90 seconds. Leaving the teabag in the cup will produce a deeper flavor. As with most teas, it is common to get more than one cup of tea from a bag. This tea stood up to refilling my cup 2 more times (from the initial cup). You'll know when the leaves are depleted from all flavor
Overall I really enjoyed this tea. It will make a nice addition to my collection.
